Tasting Notes: Upon receiving 94 points from Decanter for the 2017 GSM, the Naumes’ have decided to offer up the next vintage for the OWE Founders’ Barrel Auction – the 2018 GSM blend.  This blend consists of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre and 10% Petite Sirah splashed in to add some darkness and intrigue.  100% Rogue Valley AVA.  The Grenache is sourced from the Naumes’ estate “Frink 1-9” vineyard; the Syrah purchased from Carpenter Hill and Ellis Vineyards; the Mourvedre is sourced from Folin; Petite is sourced from Carpenter Hill as well until new plantings of these varietals come online for the Naumes’.

Each varietal was crushed and vinified separately before aging approximately one year, blended in February 2020, then allowed to marry in barrel until bottling (approx. 20 months total in approximately 30% new French oak).  The resultant blend has an array of wild, exotic and complex flavors and textures.  Grenache brings elegance, brightness, red fruit notes of wild red cherry, ripe raspberry and subtle hints of crushed stone and white pepper.  Syrah lends dark fruit flavors such as blueberry and wild blackberry and a wonderful savoryness including flavors of grilled meat and fresh ground coffee.  The Syrah also lends rich body and weight to the blend.  The Mourvedre adds complexity and subtle notes of cherry cola and hints of truffle.  Finally the Petite delivers dark, dense color, some nice rich tannin and body to complete the textural experience.  Ultimately the blend comes together delivering loads of exciting and enjoyable flavors and layers which seem to roll endlessly around the palate.  The Naumes family and Winemaker Chris Graves are excited to offer this 2018 GSM blend.
